当中国与世界许多国家的新冠疫情都在逐步得到控制之时,美国那边的疫情却似燎原之火越烧越旺。根据路透社最新公布的公共卫生数据，美国新冠肺炎新增确诊病例和住院人数持续攀升，已经达到6个月内的最高点。
当地时间9日，全美新冠肺炎确诊病例已经连续三天日均增长超过10万例，比过去一周上升了35%，其中路易斯安那州、佛罗里达州和阿肯色州的病例激增状况最为严重。全美范围内的住院人数在过去一周上升了40%，死亡率上升了18%(有滞后)其中阿肯色州的死亡人数最多。另外，佛罗里达州已经连续8天刷新新冠肺炎住院人数的纪录。此外，在全美范围内，因感染新冠病毒而接受治疗的儿童数量也在上升。
8月5日，美国北卡罗来纳州班康县校委会以4:2投票通过校园强制口罩令，要求幼儿园到12年级的所有教职员工和学生在室内都必须戴口罩，此举引发学生家长强烈不满。
在当天的会议上，数位家长情绪激动，声称通过法案的官员是罪犯，应当被关进监狱。还有家长称，新冠病毒根本不存在，是软件开发出来的。北卡罗来纳州共和党众议员也出面声援，称这些通过法案的自由派官员才是对孩子最大的威胁。

After an unruly audience forced the Buncombe County Board of Education to call a recess during its Aug. 5 meeting, a group of parents opposing the district’s mask mandate “overthrew” the current board and instated themselves into the positions.
Roughly 30 people signed loose-leaf paper claiming themselves “witnesses” of the new school board.
“They acted as a dictatorship, and so therefore, the people then take it into our own hands to abolish that governance and reelect new members right then and there,” the group's leader Stephanie Parsons told the Citizen Times.
Buncombe County Schools attorney Dean Shatley said the group’s actions “unequivocally” do not mean the current school board is out of office.
“I know they’re very passionate and care a tremendous amount about what they were here to speak about, but what they did has no authority under the law,” he said.
This time, the protesters’ fury was sparked by the board’s vote to continue its mask mandate into the 2021-22 school year.
At a specially called meeting at 10 a.m. Aug. 5, the school board voted 4-2 to require all staff and students who do not show proof of a COVID-19 vaccine to wear masks while in school buildings and on buses. No public comment was permitted during the specially called meeting.
Nearly three dozen speakers took the podium holding signs stating, “let our children breathe,” “our kids, our choice,” and “the fake vaccine is the plandemic.” Many wore black T-shirts emblazoned with “unmask our kids.”
Among the public commenters was 11th District Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who told school board members they should be “ashamed of themselves” for continuing to require face coverings.
Cawthorn scolded the school board for voting on the mask mandate before community members were able to weigh in.
“You have muzzled (parents’) voices just as you have muzzled our children,” he said. “You passed this mask mandate without input from those who hold you accountable because you knew it was wrong. You knew it would never withstand the scrutiny of the public. I’ve witnessed swampy backdoor tactics from corrupt bureaucrats in Washington D.C., but what you have done here puts that all to shame.”

A congressman dropped in on a North Carolina school board meeting — and slammed the district’s COVID-19 mask mandate.
“Forcing our children to wear a mask is nothing short of psychological child abuse, period,” U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, a Republican, told Buncombe County Schools officials on Thursday. “Their social skills are stunted.”
The remarks came after leaders in the Asheville-area district voted 4-2 to require unvaccinated students and workers to wear face masks when the school year starts on Aug. 23, WLOS reported. Cawthorn joined more than two dozen people who spoke about the decision during the school board’s public comment period, according to the TV station.
“I’ve witnessed swampy back-door tactics from corrupt bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., but what you have done here today puts that all to shame,” Cawthorn said in a video of the meeting posted to YouTube.
Cawthorn criticized the mandate as health officials have recommend everyone mask up while working at or attending K-12 schools this fall. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges people to wear face coverings in school buildings, even if they are vaccinated.
Statewide, Gov. Roy Cooper ended a mask mandate in schools and is letting districts make their own decisions.
As the school year approaches, the topic has sparked debate at school board meetings across North Carolina. While some parents have said wearing masks should be a choice left up to families, others argue requiring face coverings can help protect children under age 12, who are not yet eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines, The News & Observer reported.
As of Wednesday, community coronavirus transmission in Buncombe County was considered “high.” Health officials urge people in areas with “high” or “substantial” transmission to wear masks indoors as the delta variant continues its spread.
It’s not the first time Cawthorn has weighed in on controversial topics during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Western North Carolina congressman has criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, and said during a radio interview that an effort to spread the word about vaccines might be used to “go door to door to take your guns. They could then go door to door to take your Bibles,” The Charlotte Observer reported.
Cawthorn was elected to Congress in 2020 after pulling an upset in that year’s GOP primary. He represents North Carolina’s 11th district, in the mountains.
